Not sure that anyone will actually read this, but I feel too strongly not to put this out there. Tonight I was on netflix searching through instant movies in the gay/lesbian section. While it is true that I am gay, it is rare that I enter this viewing category. In reading the reviews of a movie I found something that knocked the wind out of me. After a few legit reviews came this: gays will burn in hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel lucky to live my days in a place where I can openly be who I am. Here in Massachusetts, especially in Boston, there are plenty of rainbow flags and equality stickers plastered around. I have the legal right to marry. It makes me sad to think that there are still so many people that don't have that. I hope that in my lifetime, that changes.
I grew up not being discriminated against. Being white and raised by highly educated, successful people protected me away from that. After coming out in my mid twenties I quickly realized the reality of discrimination. It was clear to me in a way that it never could have been before. All of a sudden I was part of a group that was hated just because of the people they are attracted to. I was part of a group that in some parts of the world are killed just because of the people they are attracted to. That's pretty hard to swallow. I don't dwell on the people that think who I am is wrong. Then there are days like today, comments like this.
To counteract this show of outright hatred, I urge you to watch the following short clip. It shows that there are amazing people in the world standing up for me and people like me. I choose to think about people like this instead.

Just like last year, I spent Halloween evening with the family that I babysitt for. It was a little chilly but we had a great time. I was a cat, but only from the neck up....too cold to go without a long coat. No idea who the dog or owner is but they were more than happy to pose for a picture. LOVE the lobster costume!

I went to the final SOWA market of the season and it was COLD! The shaded areas still had a bit of leftover snow. The mood was quite festive with many of the artists dressed in costumes. I had a yummy sandwhich at Grilled Cheese Nation. Brussel sprouts have been a new obsession of mine... baked to a nice crisp.

I took a great class over the weekend to finally learn how to use my camera. It was described as a photo tour and was exactly what I needed. We sat inside for a little over an hour going over buttons and what they do. Then we hit the streets. Trial and error with a teacher to check in with. He gave us multiple "assignments" and was there to help when needed. It was super helpful. Now I just have to actually remember everything. Thank goodness I took notes.

This survey was on a blog that I read and I thought I would share my answers.

Are you open with your sexuality? I am when it is appropriate. There are times when it's just not polite to yell, "Hey everyone, I'm a lesbian!" I am also very thankful that I live in a place that I have the ability to be honest. I can hold my girlfriend's hand when I walk down the street and even work in an office with 3 other out lesbians!
Who was the 1st person you told that you’re a lesbian? Actually, I think that the very first person was me. I finally realized that I had feelings for another woman that weren't going away. It was extremely scary to admit it to myself and then to say it out loud. I Distinctly remember telling my best friend. It was really hard to get the words out but she was amazing and told me that it didn't matter.
Overall, how difficult was it to come out? It was mostly challenging to come out to myself and then try to figure out what that meant for me. I thought I knew myself pretty well, but a lot of that changed. There was a process of getting to know this part of me. There was also a mourning period that came along with it. This is something that only people who have been through it can actually understand. You mourn for the person that you thought you were and the life that you thought you would lead. You also have to mourn the life of heterosexual privilage that exists in even the most liberal places. It was also very difficult to see the reactions of my family memebers. While they are all supportive now it was sad that they were disappointed.
Do you own anything with the Gay Rainbow on it? Not totally sure how to tell the difference between a regular rainbow and a gay rainbow. I do have a few tee shirts. One was hand drawn by a friend for my first Pride.
Do you consider yourself Butch, Androgynous, or Femme? This is such a crazy question because no one would ever consider asking this to a strait person. And trust me, there are plenty of "butch" staight people out there! With all of that said, I'm pretty girly but do own what my co-workers call "lesbian shorts."
What famous lesbian is your favorite? Hmmm...so many great choices. Of course there's Ellen & Cynthia Nixon, however, also the women that fought for equal rights for gay and lesbians and continue to.
What is your favorite lesbian movie? I don't know that I've even seen more than 1.
Do you believe you were born a lesbian? Thanks to continuing research I am assured that my sexuality was determined even before I was born. It has nothing to do with nature, nurture, or anything else.
Are you proud? I am proud that I can be open about who I am but sad that that isn't the case for everyone. The movement of acceptance is something that I am proud of and I hope continues to move it's way across our country and the world.

After a day or two of a sore throat that turned to a completely stuffed nose I headed to my acupuncturist. She is AMAZING. The result? The magnets that you see on my belly (there were also some on my ankles). The scary looking juice box is a personalized herbal tea. I ventured to Boston's famous Chinese herbalist. With a feel of my wrist he had a "perscription" written in Chinese characters. The staff whipped up 14 of the pouches, 2 each day for 14 days. Yep, it tastes totally gross. However, within less than 24 hours I was no longer blowing my nose. At all.

Every day I see families and children that are in need. Sometimes their needs are psychological. Sometimes they are as basic as where to find food. Due to this I took it upon myself to write what I have come to call "begging letters." These are short and briefly describe early intervention, the kids we see, and their many needs. Today I got a phone call from Happy Baby. They make organic baby food and toddler goodies. The rep was totally into it and will be sending 100 SAMPLES! I was totally blown away. So...if you have little ones at home....go buy their products!

I'm not a hockey fan, but have to admit the last 5 mins of the final game that I just watched was pretty exctiting. However, maybe it was the fact that I am lying in bed with a pan of brownie crusts. No, I didn't just make them for myself! Almost all of them ended up at the house of a co-worker who just had a baby. I stumbled upon this AMAZING stuff. It is the creamiest gelato I have EVER had....and I practically lived on gelato when I was in Europe a super long time ago. It even comes in a screw top container for easy storage and re-use when you completely devour it in one sitting. Don't say I didn't warn you.

I have been receiving acupuncture treatments for about 2 months. Within 1 visit I was a believer. I thought I'd post a few pictures. These were taken by my acupuncturist with a phone camera so the quality isn't the best. You might have to look closely, as they are hair thin.

After a visit to the dentist I have decided to try a little better. I am trying to change my almost never flossing behavior to daily. During my Whole Foods visit today I also bought an all natural mouth wash. She also gave me a small lecture about the teeth grinding that I do at night. It was very clear for her to see that it was a habit. I didn't even have to tell her. This is something that i have been doing since I was a kid. Anyone who's ever spent the night in the same room, or building!, with me knows it's BAD. She told me that my teeth were almost flat in places! Oops! So, that also means that I have to be sleeping with my mouth guard actually in my mouth.

With the advice of my accupuncturist (who is AMAZING!!) I am changed some of my eating habits. I used to eat yogurt with granola for lunch every day. As it turns out, my body was way overloaded on dairy. The yogurt was just the tip of the dairy iceberg. Instead for lunch I am having baked sweet potatoes (an obsession), steamed kale, and black or red rice. On top of this mix I add shelled flaxseed. Someone at work joked that I was going to live forever.
The last picture is a batch of hemp seed corn bread that I pulled out of the oven tonight.

Two weekends ago started yet another major clean. I'm the person that actually loves organizing a closet. Yep, I even did that as a teenager. Crazy, I know. Due to the fact that my apartment was getting way to dusty and dirty, I decided to spend a weekend and attack it. This ended in a full extra empty shelve on my bookcase, far less dust hiding in corners, and 4 big bags going to Good Will. That doesn't include the huge bag of paper for recycling. It was great and long over due. I find that I always feel good after I do it and realize that I didn't need all of that stuff after all. I'm the girl that seem to always find free stuff. Well, it has been living in a closet in the form of bath products. I found 6 full sized tubes of toothpaste (not even the kind I use) and way to many bottles of shower gel and shampoo. All of these being un-opened. While I am keeping stuff that I will use, the rest is going to a family shelter. I see kids on them all the time for work. They need it much more than I do.

MAJOR pain

My life for the last week or so has involved being in MAJOR pain. Very limited range of motion in my neck and pain that would shoot down to my fingers and lower back. Today I had my first visit with an accupuncturist. She used accupuncture as well as cupping (1st photo-just an example from Google images) and a type of Chinese massage. The massage was the only part that was painful. I feel better but there is still work to be done. She told me that my body was spasming in lots of areas, which led to the intense pain of working it out during the massage. While I am still in pain, it's not like it was and I am so thankful! It's hard to do my job, which involves crawling around on the floor AND being in and out of the car all day AND carrying lots of heavy things, while in pain. There's a reason that this stuff has been around so long!

A HUGE early intervention thank you goes out to Whole Foods Market Fresh Pond in Cambridge. Their PR person contacted me a few weeks ago about a possible donation. I had applied for a food donation with them last year for our family night. I managed to stay in contact with this person and was so excited to hear from her again. They had left over toys that they could no longer keep on their shelves and didn't have anything to do with them. So she thought of us. We're not talking any old toys here. WF only sells toys that are really great quality, usually wooden and organic cotton. I arrived last Friday to pick them up not having any idea what was being given. I was blown away when they rolled out a cart. The price tages are still on them and I just finished adding it all up....$568.00 worth! These will be raffled off to children in our program at family night this year.
If you are not a WF shopper, you should stop by sometime. This is just the tip of the ice berg when it comes to community support that they do. I LOVE them more and more all the time!

I am the proud new owner of a SodaStream! The amount of seltzer I drink is pretty insane and I have wanted one of these. The cheapest one retails for $100 and I was not willing (or really able) to fork that over. At the Brookstone outlet, however, I saw her. One sitting on a shelf. While I wouldn't have picked red, the fact that it was only $50 sold me. Now she is mine! I see us living a wonderfully bubbly life together.

Last Wednesday was a day of major snow here in Boston. I didn't work and instead did the following:
1. Made a kitchen towel out of 2 cloth diapers (BRAND NEW), baked chocolate chip bread, and made a huge batch of curried lentil stew. We got almost 15 inches of snow!

In my job I see many kids with health issues. Actually, these are usually my favorite kids. With a case load like that, however, it means hospitalizations. When these kidsa re in the hospital, I always try to visit them. The visit is just as much for the parents as for the child. The stress of a hospitalized child is huge, but around Christmas it's that much worse. I got a call from the parent of one of these kids today. Her child was admitted and it's looking like they will be there over Christmas. While this is hard on them, it's also really hard on her older sisters. So tonight I will be making another trip to Children's.
Each time I'm there it's a good reminder to me of why I do what I do. Kids are amazing, especially the ones with lots of odds stacked against them. They continue to inspire me more each day. As do their parents with their amazing strength and love.

Gifts of Thanks

A gift card to a book store is one of the best gifts that I can receive. I was completely blessed by a sizeable one to a local bookstore this week. It was given to me by a fmaily that I have been seeing for around a year. I was the person that did the intake on their micropreemie twins when they came home from the NICU and have been with them ever since. They are a wonderful family with children that I look forward to seeing each week. What was just as special, if not more, was the card that they attached. Mom and dad both wrote about how wonderful it has been having me as the therapist that visits each week. They commented on the advice (only when asked for) and support that I have given that has helped them through the last year. Melted my heart.
Ironically later that day a box arrived for me at my office. It was from another family of twins. I was with them for around the same amount of time. Their twins were early, but no where near that early. They are doing well and were discharged from Early Intervention a few weeks ago. I was totally surprised to get a box from them with a gift and photos of the children.
My job is tough and many times thankless. I give everything I can to these families, sometimes to the point of pure emotional exhaustion. A kind word, especially on a painting by a 13 month old, goes a really long way.

I was serenaded last night by 2 of the kids that I babysitt for. They came into the kitchen as I was baking cookies and told me they had a song for me. It was "we wish you a merry christmas." Today someone asked me why I love my job. This was my answer:

I love my job because it challenges me every day. I see things that most people don't know exists or don't want to realize exists. It takes me into the lives of people during their joy, heartbreak, immense grief, and every other human emotion. It's amazing to see people learn to connect with their children, appreciate what they have and come to terms with it not being their ideal, and experiencing babies/children do things that doctors swore they would never be able to do. Many times these things are completely and utterly frustrating, but when I step back I feel amazingly honored to be part of it all.

sarah and i had quite the thanksgiving. ours started wednesday night. a fun time was had by all.

Craft Discovery!

I have been on a purging mission for the last 6 wks or so. Getting rid of things that I don't use, need, wear, etc. It's amazing how much I have gotten rid of and how it's almost impossible to tell! Tonight I found a pair of shorts that never fit right. They were a cute print and an idea came to me. The pockets in the back are the kind that fold over and button. I knew that I could do somthing with them. I ended up making a little pouch in less than 20 mins! It was so easy and best of all, there was no pattern. I am NOT good at following directions. Plus, when I do a project I have to start it and finish it within a small amount of time or I lose interest. Check out the pictures!

There is a big batch of butternut squash and apple soup cooking on my stove top right now. The recipe is pretty easy. The most time consuming part is chopping everything. I highly recommend it and it freezes well.

I spent this afternoon and evening with the fabulous family that I babysitt for. They are just the best. Trick-or-treating through the South End was awesome. The brownstones were decorated and people were out on their stoops. Most of the people passing out candy were sipping on glasses of wine. That's my idea of trick-or-treat. This dude was in a BP suit and covered in oil. Amazing.

I'm not sure who came up with the theory that being gay is a choice. Is it a choice to be strait? Do straight people ever think about how it would feel to only have the ability to get married in certain states? Do they worry about their safety walking down the street and holding hands with someone they love? I doubt it. As someone who is gay I know how it can suck. If I could choose to be strait, don't you think I would?
